Windows client slow and Mac access fast

I have a Filemaker 5.5 Server running on OSX 10.2.1. When I try to access a database using a Windows(XP or 2000) client it can take up to 10 seconds to prompt for a password. But If try it from a mac client (9 or OSX) it is immediate. Also, if I try to access a linked field from a windows machine, it takes up to 7 seconds for the list box to appear. But from a mac it is immediate.

Any ideas why the windows client would be slower?

Thanks,

Joel

Probably some subtle TCP/IP problem. Could you try the other way, FM Server on Windows?

I will try to give that a try latter this week and let you know.

Thanks,

Please do! I am trying to put various pieces of knowledge and experience together especially in Server area.

Found a solution to my problem and a possible bug in FileMaker 5.5.

All of my macs were accessing the files using the HOST button and everything was nice and fast. All of my windows clients were browsing to the folder were the files are kept and doubling clicking. What appears to have been happening, is every time FM needed access to a linked field it would try to access the file directly and then get sent to the server. This would explain the delay. This would even happen if you used the HOST button and the default directory was pointing to the directory were the FM files were located. Now, if you changed the default directory to something else, and then used the HOST button, the windows clients would access everything just as fast as the macs.
