[color:"red"] frown.gif As some of you have heard I had a loss in my family this week ... Her name was PC_Calendar_v2.fp5, and she died of "corruption" with 1500 plus records in her. I have had a hard time replacing her. How ever i do believe that I have found a fool proof way to prevent this from ever happening again. Here is the simple yet helpful script I am using as an "Exit Script"

Save a Copy As (PC_Calendar_v2_BACKUP.fp5)

As im sure all of you know filemaker doesn't really have a backup option.

I just have this script set to run every time I close the database.

[color:"blue"] confused.gif I would like some feedback on what you think about it ... Let me know if there is anything that you can see that might make it not so "fool proof"

[color:"purple"] Also please don't forget to rate me!! [color:"purple"]

Remember, FileMaker is a development tool. It comes with nothing pre-built, the developer has to make everything happen.

It has the *potential* to have auto-backups using the technique you have discovered -- there are probably more that other people have discovered. FMP also has a better backup system available if you team FMP up with FileMaker Server. Not really ecconomical wfor single users, but awesome for multi-user solutions.

well, so you recovered some and lost some. then i guess that is it. yes, you have ti back up your files. now let's assume you back up your files by using filemaker back up script. then it will create a back up file in a same folder where your original file is. now what if your computer crashes ?

you will lose your original file + your back up file same time. so safe back up is that you have to save your back up file at safe place either manually or automatically. if you use filemaker server back up process can be automated. for mac, you can use apple script. and for pc, we can automate this by using batch program in window 9.x. but i don't know it is still possible with window 2000 and NT AND XP ? SO I ASK IF I WANT TO BACK UP MY FILE INTO ZIP DRIVE OR TO SOME OTHER FOLDER IN A HARD DRIVE , IS IT POSSIBLE TO AUTOMATE THE BACK UP PROCESS IN WINDOW 2000 OR XP ?

ANYONE ?

kyle

The "Save a Copy As..." command can be set up to prompt the user for the path and name of the file. The use can then save to another disk.

Of course, this requires a bit of self-assembly from the user.

to kyle: At this point I have the file Copying its self every time that its

closed. It is copying to a server on my network. The "copied" files

are then being backed up on tape every night.

to vaughn: Under the "Save A Copy As" function you can specify a file.

I have is set to overwrite the previous copy of the file upon

exit... therefore eliminating all user intervention.
