BobWeaver Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 When setting up layouts like this it's a good idea to have an accurate ruler handy so that you can measure exactly the margins at the top and bottom of the label sheet. In the layout setup dialog you should select fixed margins. Then, for the top and bottom margins, enter the exact margins that you measured from the label sheet. Alternately, you can enter zero for the margins, and then compensate in your layout by adding a header and footer that are the same as the label top and bottom margins. In your layout, turn on the rulers so that you can accurately see the body size. Then make sure that your body size is exactly the same as the height of the label (1-7/16") plus the gap (1/16") for a total of 1-1/2". Then, the gap between labels should be taken care of. You can move your fields around on the body part as necessary. Make sure that in the sliding/printing options, you don't have the uppermost field set to slide, and make sure that the "reduce enclosing part" option is not checked for any field. Do a test print or a print preview. If it still only gets 7 labels per page, look and see if the printing starts in a different position on each label. - If the printing starts in exactly the same place on each label, then you need to reduce the size of the header or footer ( or top or bottom margin). - If the printing starts a little lower on each label, you need to reduce the body part a little. - If the printing starts a little higher on each label (not likely since you are getting too few labels per page), you need to increase the body part a bit, and then compensate by reducing the header/footer. But, adjust one thing at a time. Tweak and repeat as necessary until you get the proper results.

BobWeaver Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 I forgot to mention that if the printable area of the printer is less than the label sheet you will have problems. Most labels designed for computer printers nowadays have big enough top and bottom margins on them that there is no problem. But, apparently there are still some types of label sheets that just don't work.

FritzOK Posted January 16, 2003 Author Posted January 16, 2003 you said: I reckon you either need to reduce or delete the footer on the layout, or check whether the body part has the options selected to "allow part to break across page boundary" and "discard remainder of part before new page". To check, double-click on the "body" label in Layout mode. If it does have the options selected, turn them off. No footer and the body doesn
BobWeaver Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Okay from what you have said, I've just done the math (1-7/16 + 1/16)*8 = 12 inches, meaning of course, that these label sheets don't have any top or bottom margin. I should have considered this before. So, the labels start right at the top edge of the page. Obviously you won't be able to print on the top .2" of the first label or the bottom .2" of the last label, but that shouldn't be a problem. Here is something you can try. Create a new blank layout. Delete the header and footer parts. Under the view menu select the Graphic Rulers option. Do a page setup and select the custom page size for the label sheet you are using. Click OK. Back in your layout, stretch the body part down until it is a little more than 12 inches long (past the 12 inch mark on the vertical ruler). You should see a thick dotted page break line right at the 12 inck mark indicating where the end of page is. If this line is somewhere else, then Filemaker is not getting the correct page size info from the printer driver. If the page break does occur exactly at the 12 inch mark, then there is a problem with your label layout. If the page break occurs at just a little less than 12 inches (11.8" for example) then take this number and divide it by 8. That is the size your body part should be. Go back to the label layout, and delete any header and footer parts. Make the body part exactly the height mentioned above (or maybe just a tiny bit less). In the layout setup, again set "fixed margins" and set them all to zero. Try printing again. If you still get 7 per page, make the body part smaller still and try again. Repeat until you get all 8 on the page. If you finally get all 8, you can then go back into the layout and adjust the field positions as necessary.
