phatphish Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 I'm using FM Unlimited on an OS X Server cuz I need to display some calendar data on my website. If I want to make the calendar DB a host file on the X Server so other PCs can access it, do I need to install FM Server on the X Server? Or FM Unlimited will suffice? Thanks a lot!
Kurt Knippel Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 Technically Unlimited will suffice. It allows an unlimited number of IP connections. However do be careful because the resources required by a LAN user connection far outweights the resources used by and web connection and you are limited in performance on the LAN side. If you only have a few (less than 5) occassional users, then you should be fine. More than 5 user or if they are heavily using the solution, then you should install a Filemaker Server.
phatphish Posted February 10, 2003 Author Posted February 10, 2003 Thanks a lot for the prompt reply! However, whenever I try to access the calendar DB from a PC and update records in it, the changes never show up on the OSX immediately. I need to close the DB in OSX and reopen it in order to see the changes. I wonder if it's because I opened the DB as a host instead of a guest... I didn't open the calendar DB from the "File->Open->Hosts" link because I dun see the DB in the host list... Any thoughts? Thanks!
Kurt Knippel Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 OS X hosting a DB will only work with TCP/IP, and you need to have your guest machine set to this. Also having File Sharing enabled on the OS X machine is a sure way to corrupt your database. TURN FILE SHARING OFF! Then set your guest machine to use TCP/IP networking and use the File -> Open -> Host dialog for opening the DBs.
phatphish Posted February 10, 2003 Author Posted February 10, 2003 YAY it works! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.
