Reporting 102

Featured Replies

Thanks guys for your help on my last "Reporting 101" question. Here's a new one for ya.

I am trying to create a simple report, but this time using data from a child file to display in the parent file. Somehow, I can't make this work.

I have a parent.fp5 file, and a child.fp5 file.

In the child.fp5 file I have 3 fields:

Task - [Text]

Hours - [Number]

TotalHours - [summary, Total of Hours, Number]

Now I create a relationship between parent and child tied on a 4th field, a constant "1" (that's "one") to make sure that all files get related.

I use a sub-summary part by Task and put the Summaryfield "TotalHours" as well as description "Task" in my part. I sort the whole thing after Task.

Unfortunately, in Preview mode, I get nothing (or just one record) in the parent file when I try to see my report.

Do you guys have a suggestion on how I might try to get around this thing? Or will all my reports have to be in the original file containing the data?

Any help very much appreciated. I am almost afraid that you will confirm my assumption simply because when I go in browse mode on that layout in the parent file, I only get one record. That means a report could never be successful, since it needs an aggregate of records, right?

Any help very much appreciated!

Joe

You appear to be trying to print a portal -- bad idea!

Set up the report in the child file, and print from there.
