I have a dual processor server with win 2k server and a proprietary app. The fmp server I currently use (windows NT) is about ready to die and its slow. I want to move the FMP server over to the 2k server with the fast scsi drives. Are there any issues. Do I still control the server with 2K server the same as nt workstation? I can't seem to find a lot of documentation on the usage.

Anyway

thanks

FM folks insist on having FMServer on a separate server. That's the way we have it set up in our shop. I'm really not sure why but some of the problems I've seen in different knowledgebases were resolved by having FMserver on it's own server. How many users are on it at any given time?

While it will be faster on the new machine, Windows network services and FileMaker server might disagree on task priority sometimes. But it is possible, sometines the one or the other service will slow down a bit, so what...

But given the price of the FM Server, get some cheap PC with a 7200 rpm drive & 256+ Meg of RAM, + Win2K workstation, so you get the most out of it. Backups should be stored on network volume to save a tape drive.

Definitely just the W2K workstation and not the W2000 server!

The FM Server documentation says it needs "Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Professional (10 or fewer users only)"

Say I have 60 different people for whom I will be hosting a single database on a machine with FM Server. Can I get by with Win2k SP2 OS, or do I need the Win2k server OS?

Thanks for your expertise, Mary Z

You do not need Win Server. Period.

My best FM server runs on W2k sp3.

Just assign priority to background tasks -- FM Server service.
