"Illegal Operation" when Print Setup opened

Featured Replies

System: Windows 98 SE with FileMaker Pro 6.04

Problem: Whenever Print Setup is opened (or called out as a Script Step,) the user gets the following error message; "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, etc." FileMaker shuts down, and if it is opened again, the splash screen shows up briefly and then the same error message shows up. A restart lets the user back into FileMaker, but the problem is repeatable.

The printer is an HP LaserJet 4000, connected via the network.

I just figured out the Windows 98 machine is having more serious print problems... This issue is not with FileMaker or my scripts, but with some printing problem affecting numerous programs. Does anybody have any Windows 98 troubleshooting tips?

Well, I'm already running Windows 98 Second Edition, and the page you pointed me to basically says everything is included in SE, so... I dunno. I wish this was easier to troubleshoot (like a Mac!) :

UPDATE:

The illegal operation error occurs when I use the Print script step. It works when I check the "Perform without dialog" box, but when I uncheck it (allowing the user to select Manual Feed), the system totally bombs. I tried this on two Windows 98 systems, and in only happens on the problem PC.

Like I said earlier, I'm running the latest version of FileMaker and Windows 98, Second Edition. This has to be a bug. Anyway, I'll get back to work and figure out a work-around. Man, I hate Windows.

You should hate windows 98. Illegal operations are usually memory infractions. These dont happen with win2k/xp.

Try updating the printer driver.
