Hello Jerry,

Your question is a little confusing. One doesn't connect to FMU ising any version of FileMaker. confused.gif

FMU is for broadcasting filemaker databases to the web, so users would generally be expected to 'connect' to it using a web browser.

Could it be that you mean FMS rather than FMU?

If so then yes, FMPv5.5 users can connect to databases hosted on FMSv5.0, however any specific v5.5 features (eg the Set Next Serial Value script step or the GetField( ) function will not be available. wink.gif

Hi !

Woah yes, you're right, big mistake I made here.

In fact, I forgot parts of my question while writing my first post : blush.gif

The problem I have is the following : I got about 50 persons that can use the inline version to access my FMP databases.

But I also got 6 "superusers" 4 of them will have to use the Internet version, but 2 of them want to keep using the FMPro version.

I was wondering if it was possible for these special 2 users to access the databases on FMU through FMPro "remote access" ?

I know that using only a fmpro version and opening a database remotely with another FMPro version causes the database to change while the remote user uses it.

I was then wondering if I "HAD" to go with a FMS and a FMU version for my needs ?

Hope I'm clear enough, and thx a lot for your answer,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Yes it is possible, if your server has a static IP address, remote users can enter that IP address in their Connect to Host screen in FM and can view the databases.

This is very very slow though.

Especially if the users are using a dial up connection (in this case it can take up to a few minutes just to open the database alone)

I have FileMaker server running in my office on a broadband connection, I am on a broadband connection at home so I tried this and it was still quite slow.

I saw a post earlier today where someone mentiones using Terminal Server from Microsoft to do this.

I don't know anything about this so maybe you could have a look into this ir someone else may post to give you some more info on this.

Hi,

yes, the Terminal Server is an option I've just been offered by the system administrator.

I work for a University so we have a broadband connection, and the users that would need to access the data through FileMaker will be on the same broadband connection, I've tested the solution already and it was fast enough for my users needs smile.gif

The only problem with the Terminal Server is that for a same account, I've been told it only allowed 2 connections, which could actually fit my needs.

So, to make things clear just one last time, the final answer would be that FM Server is optional ?

I could use only FileMaker unlimited ?

As I work for a research group, their budget is a bit limited, so they'll be interested in the "less expansive" solution...though I still think that 800$ is not really too much asking !

Thank you very much for your answers, it's helping me a lot !

If you have only 2 users connecting through FMP then using just FM Unlimited would be fine, if more than 10 users were connecting through FMP then you would need server.

For your needs FM Unlimited alone would be fine.

The main difference between hosing direct to FMP from Server and from Unlimited is that when you host from Unlimited, it only deals with one request at a time, Server will deal with all requests at the same time.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

Ed.

terminal server - yes, it works well.

When you think of it - how come it is faster to send a moving screen image than just some data over the network???

When I separated the data from database, data travels faster than TS data.
