I am about to upgrade a FMPro Server and all clients (about 40, soon to be 65) to the lastest current versions. We share about 70 dbs. I have been running the FMS on an imac running MACOS 8.6 for about 3 years with no real probs.

I have to choose new hardware for the FMPro server to run on (all that will be running on this server is FMPro server and I have the following options...

Mac Xserve Basic model except ram upgrade to 512MB running MAC OSX

Mac G4 workstation, basic model except 512MB RAM running MAC OSX

Windows hardware running Windows 2000

I am really interested in hearing reports good and bad running on these platforms and OSs. There seems to be many bad reports on MAC OSX, so at the moment I am pushing the windows option.

Does any platform give greater speed than any other?

What is the point of upgrading the server hardware?

Of the 3 choices, I cannot recommend running OS X, which has some serious problems with Filemaker. Crashing, DB corruption, etc.

Honestly, I would suggest either sticking with your current server hardware (you stated no real problems) or going with a Linux box or even just a newer/faster Mac system running OS 9.22
