Newbies sobek Posted May 28, 2003 Newbies Posted May 28, 2003 I'm trying to read all relevant posts about relationships and doing finds between related databases, but I am somewhat confused by the language. I think it's because my related files don't follow the traditional definitions. I have a database in which people can enter information on donations - date, type, amount, and whether or not a thank you letter was created. Whenever this information is entered, a new record is created in a related database. The reason for that database is to make finds/reports/etc. easier. So, which is my "parent" file and which is the "child" file? I would think the one where you enter the information would be the parent file, but because you are actually working in a portal, that's linked to the other file, would the other file be the parent? I'm hoping that once that's cleared up, I can apply what is talking about in other threads. Opinions?
slstrother Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 The file you use to enter the data is the parent. The portal records are in the child file.
Newbies sobek Posted May 29, 2003 Author Newbies Posted May 29, 2003 Thanks for the response. My head was telling me this was the case, but I'm getting confused reading all of the textbooks on my desk!
Lee Smith Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 That is a problem we all had when first learning relationships I think. Lee
