Blank records when importing from Excel

Featured Replies

When I'm importing records from excel to FM, I'm getting all my data in the correct fields. It works fine, but I get hundreds of empty records.

I was thinking it was reading all those blank fields on the spreadsheet? But I cant find a way to make FM ignore them.

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did try to search for it.

Hi Steve,

FileMaker will *not* read all of those blank rows. It will however read all of the blank rows between what appears to be the end of your data and some wildcat character. Look for this wildcat (incidental) character in a cell not near your other data. Not the easiest thing to do sometimes.

You might do a search for a character in your imported records "*" in each of the fields, maybe you see something that way.

P. S.

You might look at the file in a text editor and see something beyond the returns.

BTW, any extra returns in the file before you import will produce complete blank records too. Should have mentioned that first.

Thanks Lee. After thinking on what you said, I just copied the rows I wanted to a new workbook. Import went fine. Dont know why I didnt think to try that earlier.

Thanks for your quick response

Steve
