complex duplication

I have a docket system. Each docket (one record) has related line items. Each line item is either a category or a category item. So the cat. item is related to the category which are both related to the docket.

Does anyone have any theories for a method to duplicate a docket and all its items. The trick is keeping the category and category items related.
