DNA Posted July 25, 2003 Posted July 25, 2003 Hi, Office setup OS :XP FMP6 FMS Home Setup FMP6 A question about programming with FMP6 and then putting the database in a server enviornment. When I program at home without server running I Define relationships, use open script steps etc by using the folder name in open file window. If I then take this database to the office (WIth Filemaker server) do I need to re-define these links using the Host button in the open file window or does server 'magically' take care of this ? Thanking you in advance.
Anatoli Posted July 25, 2003 Posted July 25, 2003 Put all your databases into one folder. Set them to multiuser -- hidden, only the first as visible. Move all databases to FM server folder on one folder down. That is all.
ernst Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 This works when the 'Save relative path only' checkbox is checked when you define your relations. When defining relations with the files already on the server you have to use the 'Host' button to select the files. But if everything is setup like it should be this is the only way to access files on the server anyway... Regards, Ernst.
Anatoli Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 RE: This works when the 'Save relative path only' checkbox is checked when you define your relations. In some cases FM breaks the links regardless of setting in that checkbox. But that happen ONLY if solutions is using databases on server AND local standalone on another computer. That is wrong practice. When FM Server is hosting all databases, I didn't have such problems and that is the proper way.
fishma Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 If you are going to develop professionally, you will need to create a server environment at your home. Even with the practices stated above, always program your relationships and your External Script calls through the server. It will save you a great deal of headaches down the road.
