Delete & New record requests

Featured Replies

This is my first time ever touching a filemaker program, and no one else in the office has a clue. I am completely on my own. So, you will be hearing from me often.

One of the first problems I came across with filemaker was with the delete feature. I had created 1 database with 5 different type of records in it. After I took my head out of my screen and looked at everything, I noticed that when I went to add a new or delete a record, it would add or delete a record to/ from every one of my different records within the database? :??

(( Let me explain a different way, using our little friend "Millennium Tech.'s" icon (the apple). I made a basket (the database) with 5 different colored apples (records), (red, green, blue, orange, yellow), in it. Then when I went to add another red apple (new record) to the pile, an empty green, blue, orange & red apple would also appear. ? And like wise, when I deleted a green apple, that same # apple would be deleted from each color as well.?))

Yes, that was a little stupid. wink.gif

Anyway, I finally decided to rip apart everything and place each different record in it's own database. This proved less complex, but effective. BUT, the issue still remaines with one database.B)

Is there anyway around this feature/problem or do I have to continue with ripping this little dB apart? smirk.gif

I think you may be getting a bit confused over fields, records and databases.

When you say you ripped everything apart and placed each in it's own database, what you actually did I think was place each in it's own record which is what should be done.

When you could see your 5 apples on the screen, you were actually looking at 5 fields in 1 record, not 5 records in 1 database.

I hope this is clear!

If not let me know and I'll go into a bit more depth.

No, I had 5 records in one database. All the fields were different from record to record. So, every time I added a blank record, I would get a blank record for each different area. Then when I went to delete a blank record, I would loose info without knowing it.

But, that is all okay now because everything is in it's own database. I think I am just frustrated that I have to make all these new databases & links to each other, not knowing a simpler way?
