Multi-to-One Relationships -- are they possible?

Hi,

I'm running FileMaker Pro 6, and I'm totally new to the software. We are using it in a retail environment.

Currently, we have relationships defined, such as we enter something in the "Part #" field, and it puts data from that file into the "Description" field.

My question is, would it be possible to define relationships in a multi-to-one format where I could type in the "Year", "Model/Size", and "Description" and have it fill in the "Part #" field from the inventory file without having to create another file for this process?

I'm sorry if it's a silly question, I've been using this program for about 4 weeks.

Of course you can do this. This is essentially a lookup-type relationship.

On each side you'll need a calculated field which is a combination of Year, Model/Size and Description. Use those to setup a relationship and then the Part# would be defined as a lookup via that realtionship.

But if you already have a lookup for Description, with the part# as key field, you might run into a 'circular definition' problem.

what's that?

Field A requires Field B which requires Field A

or

Field A requires Field A (typically because of a relationship)
