I am just finishing up a small project that needed to be in filemaker, and print out high quality images. Since we produce catalogs, I naturally used TIFFs as the image format. However, when I wrote an applescript to import all of the records (necessary due to some logic needed to import the thousand or so images), I kept erring out on a group of images with a "incorrect data type" on some images.

After hitting my head on a wall for a while I finally discovered that these images happened to have transparency enabled. After a re-save in photoshop, they imported fine.

Lesson learned: filemaker does not like transparency

I wish it was that easy for me. I cannot import ANY TIF files...period. LZW compressed - no compression, transparency, no transparency...it does not matter. If the file ends in "tif" Filemaker chokes and will not import it.
