comparative date fields?

I'm trying to figure out a script that will examine two or more date fields, compare them, and then choose the one that is the most recent. Ultimately, it will need to choose the record to which this chosen date field is attached. Any ideas? Thanks.

You can just sort the records with the most recent at the top and work on that. Before sort you can do Find to limit the found records.
