I have FileMaker Pro 6.0v4. I used the FileMaker Server 5.5 CD to install the Server Administration X plug-in, which appears in my FileMaker extensions folder.

Whenever I connect to my server, the admin window notes on the bottom that I do not have the administration plug-in installed.

I shared the same problem many users had trying to update the server to the latest release. The updater sucked and someone at FileMaker should be fired. Anyhoo, I had to do a clean-install of the server program in order to update it. I was hoping this would resolve my administration problem, but it did not.

I tried installing the admin plug-in on another machine but got the same result.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Is the server admin plugin selected (checked) in FMP's application preferences?

Then it's not installed.

Does your computer have more than one copy of FMP on it? Or, are you running FMP in Classic mode? In which case you'll need the Classic version of the plug-in.

I had a similar mystery while testing FMS 5.5v4 on OS X 10.3. I had the plugin installed, and I could set the preferences for remote access on the server, such as password. I could remote administer FMS running on OS9 from my XP laptop running FMP 6. However, when I selected the server running on OS X, it would tell me that I didn't have the remote admin plug-in installed.

OK...so why can I remote admin another server? Restarted the server, restarted the client...no dice.

So I reinstalled the remote admin plugin on the XP laptop from the FMS CD (which had just been installed fresh a few weeks earlier, by the way), and now it works. And I don't see any changes to files such as FMPSADM.FMX, which I think is the extension. Even the file version for FMPSADM.FMX is the same.

Whatever the reason it finally worked--my point is that the initial installation of FMS 5.5, updated to v4 on OSX did NOT give remote admin access immediately when all indications were that it should have. So although it works eventually, there seems to be something glitchy about the installation.

Could it be a permissions issue: the plug-in had a different owner then the FMP application or something?

I have MacOS X 10.3.1. The administration plug in is in the FileMaker 6 folder -> FileMaker Extensions folder.

I tried setting the file permissions to match the web companion plugin, which did not work.

I only have one installation of FileMaker on my machine and I do not have classic installed.

The plugin has a creation date of April 10, 2002. I can't seem to find any sort of update, so I assume this is the latest revision.

Under "Kind" in the get info window, it is listed as a "Computer Admin Document" for a file type, I'm going to mess with that next.

Well, it wasn't the type & creator.

The web companion has the following:

Type: FMXT

Creator: FMP5

The Server Administration X has the following:

Type: FMXT

Creator: FMAD

The fact that the types matched should have been enough, but I changed the admin plugin to match the WC. No different.

I just can't get FileMaker to acknowledge the plugin. For fun, I installed the admin plugin on another machine in the office that has 10.2.8 and FileMaker 6. The plug in doesn't work there either.

Are you trying to administer on the same machine (ie, run FMS and FMP+RA on same box)? If so, that's definately a no-no.

Err, another thought... has FMS been setup to allow remote administration?
