Ijust got FM 6 and I'm a newbee, I tried to bring over a file into FM 6 from AW6 as ASCII file only to find that more than five or more entries where missing and some entries were duplicated? Without the original format that they were entered as?

Sounds like you have some Return characters in your AW6 file. FMP doesn't like them.

What's Return characters? What to do about it?

Open your AppleWorks 6 file in a Text Editor (such as BBEdit) before importing it, and look at the structure. Double returns will cause you problems on import. If your text editor will allow it, turn on the Show Invisibles feature. You will see all of the hidden stuff like the paragraphs, tabs, spaces, etc. In the text editor you can change the file to meet the import needs in FileMaker such as eliminating extra carriage returns.

Best way to clean thing up between programs.

Lee,

Thank you for your answer. Frank

Appleworks also has a "show hidden characters" option. A return character looks like a little vertical line with an arrow hanging off its bottom.

Hi zincb and welcome to the lists.

I don't have AppleWorks, so I didn't know that. The return character sounds like it is the same as what used in BBEdit, i.e. a hypen with a tail.

Are the spaces shown as diamonds too?
