Attaching binary data files

Hello,

I am creating a file storing records for each of the projects we work on. For each of these projects, we will be creating binary data files which are not displayable. They do not contain text, image or speadsheet data. I would like to be able to "attach" these files to records and have them stored somewhere on the database server for easy retreival at a later date. Is this possible?

Cheers,

Don.

Hi:

Which operating system are you using?

Windows XP, but the database is stored on a PowerMac running MacOS 9. We will soon be replacing the Mac with a G3 running MacOS X. We're running FM 5 at the moment with the intention of upgrading to version 6.

BTW: The files are small - well below 50KB.

Hi:

Unless the files are image files, quicktimes, or pdfs, then MacOS cannot store them in container fields (which sounds like what you wanna do). If you were using Windows, you could store just about any object in a container field (or link to it)

However, you can create a field that has the path to the file. Then if you need to access the file, you could reference the path.

PS - MacOS X runs a lot better on a G4 with lots of RAM and a good video card grin.gif

Thanks for your help Ken.
