Has anyone had the experience using FileMaker Server 5 and Filemaker Pro (5 or 6) on the same machine ? Could it become problematic ?

Hi,

Yes - problematic is certainly one word for it.

In fact, it is highly recommended that Server be run on a machine where it is the only application, so that it does not have to compete for access to the drives and I/O. There are a whole list of reasons why this is preferable, which have to do not only with performance, but also with stability and security.

You might find it worthwhile to pay a visit to the techinfo section of the FMI site:

- and download the paper there which is listed there under the heading FileMaker Server "Best Practices". It provides a lot of useful info about this and related issues.

I install FM Pro on the Server machine, but the only time it is used is when the server is down, for maintenance tasks. Otherwise, as Ray says, it's a sure-fire path to trouble.
