I used FMP utlizing FM server, but that is no longer an option as we are hosting remotely with MySQL. Can I create FMP front end to manage the MySQL data?

Yes. Using ODBC is one option. To do this on OS X you must start by uninstalling the DataDirect ODBC drivers. The setup is kind of arcane and was discussed on the Blueworld or FMExpers list. The same ODBC setup works on FM6 and FM7 and I have it running right now.
