FMP7 IWP cannot read pdf in Container

I'm puzzled. From FMP 7, I explicitly insert a Word document in a container [the document, not a reference], and it opens fine from IWP screen. But if file is pdf, Acrobat Reader launches after I say Open, then says "There was an error opening this document. File does not exist".

ANyone know what's going on?
