Here's the problem:

I want users to be able to post fields into another layout, but then not be able to return and edit those fields. Additionally, I would like the users to be able to search the fields at a later time, but not change them.

Multiple layouts. One allows editing the other is display only. Your navigational scripting will control which layout the user is allowed to be on.
