RDecker Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Haven't gotten far enough along to try this yet, but are there any figures as to what the file size is going to be on a run time DB (not counting data and other things like layouts and scripts)? In other words, what the min. size that the run time will add to a file? (I realize this is not all in one file.) decker
maverik_uk Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Decker We are writing a an off-the-shelf system to be purchased/downloaded off the web. We have now discovered the FMP7 runtime to be 33.6mb in size! If we remove some off the foreign dictionaries, we can get it down to 24mb which when compressed, comes down to 16mb. We are not sure that this is a managable size. The file incidentally is a single table solution with no more than 15 fields. Nick
andygaunt Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 eBullet eb|2 is a 20 file solution which is downloadable as a runtime. The compressed sizes are; 8.5Mb Zip file (PC) 6.9Mb RAR file (PC) 8.1Mb SIT file (Mac OSX) This is currently a FileMaker Pro 6 runtime only. We have not as yet looked at the compression rates for the version 7 runtime.
Newbies dcwerks Posted May 7, 2004 Newbies Posted May 7, 2004 For a 1.6mb Filemaker 7 file, after removing the non-english dictionaries from the Mac and PC builds, we get the following compressed sizes: .sit = 8.1mb .zip = 9.4mb Uncompressed is around 24mb for either runtime platform. Tony
Oldfogey Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Are you sure about that , Tony? I have FMP6 solutions with midget DB files which take up around 9Mb uncompressed. 9Mb compressed makes distributin almost impossible.
Newbies dcwerks Posted May 12, 2004 Newbies Posted May 12, 2004 Yeah, I'm sure I was surprised by that as well. I can send you a beta copy of the file I'm talking about if you'd like to see. Tony
Oldfogey Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Thanks, but no thanks. I can see from your portrait that you are honest and know how to count. It seems to me that FMP does no check at all on the features needed in a runtime so the more functioons are added to FMP, the larger the size of the solutions. Oh, well ....
