APost Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I've three computers, call them A, B, and C. A&B are notebooks with fm6. C is a desktop, that I want to use as a server of sorts, that's where the FM Files will reside. A&C run XP B runs 2000 if that's an issue On A, I've created an application. I copied the files to C, and opened the files on A (the computer they were originally created on) all is well. When I open the files on B, (whether they are opened on a or not) I have problems. 1. I have to give user on B full access or I get "No Access" 2. User on B, now that they have full access has to let FM know where every linked file is. Everytime they go to a page that needs a related file they get "I can't find FileD.fp5" What am I doing wrong?
APost Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 Also, tech support said to open the file on C and have that machine share the files. I tried that, still get the same message on B (can't tell on A, not enough licenses) and even when I navigate to the file it can't find, then it tells me it's not mulit user. Do I have to set all files in the application to be multi user?
andygaunt Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 If you want to access the database on multiple machines the databases will all need to be Multi user. You can set certain files to be multi user hidden so they do not appear in the hosts window. All the related files must be open on the host machine. Then, from your guest machine go to File > Open Remote. This will show you a list of available filemaker files on your network. Choose your datbase and click open. HTH Do not try to open the file via network places.
Eliz309 Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I had a situation that is similar. You probably need to go to computer C ( where the files are now stored) and just start relinking the links to the other files that are on computer C. I tried to make a copy of our database on a cd to send to someone and filemaker just kept trying to get back to the files my computer. I tried linking with the "save relative path" option checked and uncheck and it did the same thing. The only thing that worked was getting the files away from the computer I created them on and re-seting the links. Hope this helps
APost Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 I have it working more or less (less) by opening all files on C and making them all Multi-user. 1) is there a way to do this without having to open all files on C 1st? That means when someone comes in, they have to sit at C and open all the windows in the application. Not user friendly 2) What is the problem opening via Netowrk Places?
andygaunt Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Hi - The computer that has the files on is deemed to be the host. Therefore it should be hosting those files for the users. You could set the database to open automatically on that machine. By going into network places and opening the files through there you have opened the files directly and then, other users when they want to open them are now having to use you as the host, even though the files do not reside on your machine. Network trafiic increases as does the risk of damage to the files. If another person tries to open the files via the network places they will not be able to as you are currently hosting them on your desktop. This is why FileMaker has multi user functions. I recommend setting the files to start automatically on the host and connect from Open Remote or Open > Hosts to those databases. HTH
