budgy Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 I hope someone can help with this one I run my own small business and we use Filemaker to near enough do all our administration work. My problem is that if someone decides to leave my company (I'm not paranoid honest!) they could just copy the files off the computer drive, use the data and/or use the database to set up on their own. If there anything I can do to prevent anyone firstly seeing the files on the computer and then preventing someone copying the data to another computer and then opening he files. Thanks for your help.
Ender Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Host the databases on a dedicated machine in a locked location. Preventing physical access to files (and their backups) is as important as having access priveleges in place.
budgy Posted May 20, 2004 Author Posted May 20, 2004 Thanks for that How do I have the files in a locked location if people need to gain access for using the databases
Ender Posted May 22, 2004 Posted May 22, 2004 Use the Sharing options that are built into FileMaker. With one machine set up as the host, other FM clients on the network (local or WAN) can access that host through File->Open Remote.. I think the limit for FM7 as host machine is 5 concurrent users. If that's not enough, FM7 Server can host files for up to 250 concurrent users. The server version has other advantages such as automated backups and speed improvements.
