Hi;

This is my first post here so excuse me if I don't get things right first time.

I have migrated an old FileMaker II file up to my newly installed version 5.3. It seems that is has gone OK except for one bug(?). My file is a simple data base layout which I use for our company's invoices. fields are simple

Hi, Roger! I think it is a Classic/OSX font rendering issue and not anything to do with FileMaker, per se. Try adjusting the layout to use the fonts you have installed on your local machine (layout mode, EDIT > Select ALL, then choose a new font to set them all to like Arial or something.. try a few if Arial does not work).

The machine that was running FileMaker II was probably using screen-only bitmap fonts. There was a chaotic period in time when TrueType was first coming out and you needed Adobe ATM to screen use PostScript fonts and I think Apple and HP had font corruptions and stuff. Classic and X may / may not have the same font list depending upon how your system is set up.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input, Steve. I tried the fix but no luck. I know what you mean about the font situation in the past. I tried several different fonts this time but the same quirk is there. Every new record I view gets the data surperimposed upon the previous records data, unles I go record to record with the cursor active in a given field. The funny thing then is that while all the fields update correctly on screen, the few subtotal and totaling fields still show superimposed unless I have the cursor directly in one of them.

Any other ideas??

What version FMP are you using -- I specifically refer to the *patch* level, the number after the "v" in the version string.

From memory the last version you should be using is FMP 5.5v2. patch-level updates are free on the FMI web site.

Hello;

<<What version FMP are you using>>

Version 3.0Sv4 in Classic for the first conversion of my original FMII doc. Version 5.0v3 in Classic for the second conversion to get it readable for an OSX version. Version 7.0v1 (30 day demo) in OSX.

The behaviour I describe starts with the 3.0 version and is the same through version 7 - superimposition of data on the screen.

I could not find any free update to 5.5 in order to get my 5.0 version runable on OSX, which I think 5.5 is. It was purchased upgrade as near as I could figure so I left it.

The fact that the behaviour is the same for all three versions I am using is what makes me wonder...

Other ideas?

Hmm... I have no more ideas other than looking at the layouts to see if something fishy is happening with the parts or field sizes. For example, in a copy of the db, go to layout mode, select all, and force a background color on the fields to see their sizes. Maybe they're not staying completely inside the appropriate part or things are overlapping or something... and don't use the VIEW AS LIST option. Or for that matter... what happens if you create a new layout with just a few fields on it? If the problem exists on a new simple layout, then we know it's not that, at least.
