Joseph Hamilton Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 ok, I have this post going on the Script Maker board, because it started out as trying to make a script, but I moved it here because someone advised me to use Relationships. I'm using FMP 7 to create a computer inventory. The identifier is a number assigned to each computer. Something that the person I'm doing this for wants is to have each computer entry list all the work that has been done on it. Now, if it was just one job per computer, this would be easy. But they want each line to list EVERY job, so I need to define an easy way to create new fields when the user wants to add a new job. I was trying to make a script, but there is no way to define new fields in a script. Then someone suggested making a related table. So I created a related table that matches each job with the computer number. Now the problem I have is figuring out how to get that data to automatically list in the inventory database. I was able to use the auto-complete lookup option so that the first job field pulls data from the related table, but then i'd have to keep making the new fields and i'd be back where i started. I tried using FMP's Help, but all that talks about is creating the relationship and not on how to display it. Does anyone have any tips?
Reed Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Once you create a relationship between jobs and computers, you can place a portal on the computer layout that shows all the related records from the jobs table. Look up portals in the filemaker help.

Please don't do this, it isn't necessary. You will find that lots of Threads have multiple answers, but that doesn't mean you need to start "splinter" threads. Please just ride your original thread until you get a satisfactory answer. It can be confusing trying to figure out what was said in a different thread when reading the current one. Thanks Lee
