Portal not displaying data

I just got Filemaker and this is the first time I'm trying the portal capability.

I have a table Dogs, with one entry for each dog. I have one table for Vet Visits and one table for Shot Records. The linkage between these tables is Dog Name.

On the Dogs layout, I created a portal to Vet Visits to show date of visit and reason of visit. I created another portal on the Dogs layout to Shot records to show shot and next due date (calculated in the Shot record).

On the Dogs layout, no data is displayed from either of those 2 tables. Seemed pretty simple to setup, but there must be something simple I am missing.

I'm stumped. If someone wants I can send screen shots of the questioned fields, definitions and relationships.

Well, that's a new one. You had manually turned off Indexing for the Dog Name field in the other 2 tables. Without indexing the relationship failed, so nothing appeared in the portals.

I also turned off Lookup for both the Dog Name and the Clinic Name fields in those files. The relationships use those fields as keys. It makes no sense to have a field look up itself when it is the foreign key of the lookup's relationship; it's redundant.

Now that it's working, you might want to use real ID's (MicrochipID?) instead of the name, especially for the dog. I've seen a lot of dogs with the same name, which will break the integrity of your main relationships.

Clinic Name has a slightly different problem. Which is that clinics might change their name; which would break the relationship for entries with a previous name; if that matters.

Also, if the Doctor is a lookup based on Clinic Name, it means there can only be 1 doctor at that clinic. Is this always true?

Your portals in Dogs are sorted ascending by date. This means you'll can see only 2 entries before it's off the portal. I'd think you'd want to either: 1. Show more rows, or 2. Sort descending, so you see the latest on top, or 3. Both
