Wade Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Filemaker, (any version before 7) was a programe that i could understand. 7 to me is a complete mystery. 1) I'm using FM Server on a windows 2000 2) i want to edit my databases but when i talked to filemaker support they said that FM7 will not run and is not supported on windows 2000??? Can i edit the databases from my mac running through my network to the PC Do i have to copy the databases across the network to my mac to edit them??? The concept of file referenecs to me has made filemaker almost unuasable. I have all of my 11 databases in one folder on the w2000 machine and filemaker server seems to be serving them ok, but filemaker can't find anything ever??? I can work for a while using scripts then all of a sudden i will get an error message that the " " database can't be found. Can someone please explain how filemaker references are used as defined in the "define database" section and also how the "filemaker references" are used in scripts. I'v read the manual (no help) i'v read the tech documents and just can't make heads or tails of how to fix the problem. Filemaker used to be fun... this could be the worst update to a program that i have ever seen. They should not even call it filemaker. (how about Troublemaker?) thanks wade
DanBrill Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 I'm lookin' at the box and it says it will run on Win 2k with service pack 4. As long as you have the SP's up to date, it should be no problem. So I'd check that before you go nuts trying to edit via the network on the Mac. Once you get that far, you can clean up the file references pretty easily. Man, I swear, I don't know what FM pays their tech support people for. I can't tell you how many of their wrong answers I see corrected in this Forum. This is at least the 2nd one today... Good luck, Dan
Wade Posted July 8, 2004 Author Posted July 8, 2004 thanks for the help, i feel like i'm out here alone trying figure all this out. So... Is it bad to edit an active database on w2000 from the mac over the net? Is it possible? How is it that filemaker keeps telling me that it can't find a file that is on a folder with all of my databases. How can it not find it. I will check on service pack #4 Thanks Wade
DanBrill Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 thanks for the help, i feel like i'm out here alone trying figure all this out. Nah -- that's what we're here for. So... Is it bad to edit an active database on w2000 from the mac over the net? Is it possible? Can't think of a specific reason, except that the performance will lag a bit. This is beyond my expertise, however How is it that filemaker keeps telling me that it can't find a file that is on a folder with all of my databases. How can it not find it. Check the file references (File >> Define >> File References). This may clear it up. I will check on service pack #4 Thanks Wade Let us know... Good luck, Dan
Wade Posted July 8, 2004 Author Posted July 8, 2004 I checked and i do have the service pack #4 installed I think i am missing some very basic information, i must be, i'm so lost... so here goes If you have filemaker server on a pc running w2000 isn't the only way to edit the shared databases is to close down the server and stop sharing the databases and then open up filemaker 7 on the same machine and edit the data, then restart the server and share the DB's??: I did exactly this, i straightened out all of the file references ( all i did here was to delete all of them and if a database had had a relationship with another database before, i created a new reference and pointed to that database?:??) and when i use FM7 on the windows 2000 machine all of the scripts seem to work right. WHEN I GO TO ANY OF THE MACS IN MY SHOP AND TRY TO RUN A SCRIPT THAT USES IMPORT RECORDS FILEMAKER CONTINUALY CAN'T FIND THE DATABASE TO IMPORT FROM. why can't it find it? when i'm using FM7 on the w2000 machine it works but not from the mac?:? What am i missing? I tried to direct FM7 from the mac to find the database and it started importing all kinds of records (i mean hundreds and crashed my machine) There must be a basic principal here that i just don't get. What is the good of having FM7 server if you can't run scripts from remote computers. thanks Wade
Robert Kidd Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 You don't need to stop the databases being hosted, just make your changes.
H.P. Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 I thought filemaker 7 "Server" runs on windows 2003 & Windows 2000 "Server edition" w/ service pack 4 only right? Are you using Windows 2000 pro or win 2000 server?
