are recursive portals possible in FMP7?

Hello again,

I wonder if it is possible to have something like recursive portals in FMP 7.

I will try to explain what I have in mind.

Going back to my patients/episodes of care/visits model for a medical practice.

Lets say we have a table called patients with all the patients details.

Each patient can have several different episodes of care ("episodes" table) and for each episode of care each patient could be seen one or more times ("visits" table").

Each patient has a unique pt_id via which episodes are related to the main table. Each episode has its own uniqe ep_id and each visit is related to the episodes using that (of course, in turn, each visit has it own unique vis_id)

Is it possible to have a layout based on the patients table, with a portal drawing its data from the episodes table * AND * (now the difficult bit) have the related visits under each episode?

In other words is it possible to have a portal with the episodes and another portal within it or something else that would display the related visits inder each row corresponding to an episode of care?

I am sure i have seen this or something similar that achieves the same goal somewhere but I cannot pinpoint it...

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered

Hi,

Portals didn't changed as much. They still are based upon one relationship only, but you may as in v6 twickle your relationships and keys in some maner so that to mimic this tree-fashion.

In fact, the job need to start and end in the Visits Table.

Try a search on "tree" in the Forums.

Hi Ugo,

and thanks for the advice.

I did that and most solutions point to one of your own examples, but wherever I have dowloaded it (including Fusion DZine.com) from it seems to be locked or maybe it is because I am converting it to FM Pro 7 format???

Hi,

So you started with the 7 version. Lucky you are.

Yes, I didn't converted this file to 7 right now.

Sorry for this. Poor help I'm providing here.

If noone jumps on it (as I'm leaving for some holidays), you might get a trial copy of FM6 at

http://www.filemaker.com/products/fm6_family.html

This at least would make it work, and may be provide you with some more help about its structure.

In fact, you'd better look at an older file posted in the Sample section : displaying records in folders

Good luck
