Merging (exporting) from portal to master database

I have decided that data previously appearing in a layout as a portal now needs to be in the master file.

This means exporting a record to a series of fields in the master file.

I'm sure this has been done often, so I won't bore experienced importers with the peculiarities of this database. However, it is significant to note that some master-file records will be filling up 40 fields from the related (ex-portal) database, whereas other master-file records will be importing as few as 3.

So a simple loop will not do the trick.
