relationship hassle - portal to two files

Featured Replies

3 files: EVENTS, ALLNAMES & STAFFNAMES. Personnel data entered on EVENTS is staff names and other non-staff names. Am entering names in portal (with multiple rows) to create a file of all names in ALLNAMES, but want to staff names only to list onto a seperate file (STAFFNAMES) as well.

Can I do this from one portal in EVENTS or do I need two (one for non-staff and another for staff)? And how can I get the staff name entry to create a new record in both STAFFNAMES and ALLNAMES files with a single entry in EVENTS.

Hope that's clear.... feel like it should be simple but just can't get it to work.

create a relationship between staffnames and allnames.

this relation will be to a feild called NAMETYPE(just an example but what ever it is called make shure that it is the same in each data base)and set it to autoenter "staffname"from with in the staffname database

with in the allname make a pull down box that containing a list of types of names ie "cust name" Staff Name" this box will also be called NAMETYPE. and any files with the matching detales will be drawn in to the staffname. just an idea to get you going if there is any problem let me kknow and will make one for you

Thanks for the idea - but I'm not sure you quite understood my problem (or I've got your reply wrong! - I did try what you said and it works fine as far as it goes).

I've got three files - the first (EVENTS) is the main data entry file. The second file ALLNAMES is just a repository for the names (a one to many - and won't be accessed by user) and the third file STAFFNAMES (to be accessed infrequently) is a selection of staff-only names from the ALLNAMES file.

Data to be entered in EVENTS is name and type of person (ie: staff or other). When entering data in EVENTS the entry of names creates (via a relationship EVENTS ID - ALLNAMES ID) individual records for each name in the ALLNAMES file. That's all fine so far no probs.

When I enter a person type in EVENTS as 'other' it should only create a new record in ALLNAMES. But when I enter the person type in EVENTS as 'staff' I want to create a new record in ALLNAMES and a new record in STAFFNAMES as well. And this need to happen without any user access to the other files. That's where I come unstuck.

Have I made it clear? Thanks again for your kind offer of help.
