Is it possible to set the 'allow entry into field' on or off by a script?

Yes, but not in the the way you think. 1) You can use a separate, but identical layout with the "allow entry" turned off for all fields. 2) You can attach a button to the field, take the field out of the tab order, and have the attached script perform a check of a global flag field or record oriented flag before executing a "Go to Field" or not.
