elflojo Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 I work with normalized data, so when i use Popups, i have a problem and i need help. How is the best tech to make popups selections when the data lists is normalized? I put the field with the ID code on the layout and the related field over it and chenge the behavior, but when i select it, the FM show me the popup correctly (i don
QuinTech Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 Hi, elflojo, and welcome to FM Forums! Please update your profile so we know what OS and Filemaker version you are using. Let me rephrase the issue, and tell me if i got it wrong: You want to set the contents of one field (the ID) based on data you have selected in another field, and the field you are selecting in is on top of the ID number field. But when you select something from your pop-up list, that value does not appear in that field; instead, the ID number shows up in that field. Did i get it right? One place to start, before we get into it, is to move the fields so they do not overlap. This should make the problem easier to solve. Jerry
elflojo Posted September 8, 2004 Author Posted September 8, 2004 Not exact. I want to reproduce the windows style for choose selection like windows use, but i have normalized data, so the choice is a number but i want to display the text asociated. Suppose i have 2 files, one is "People" and the other "Tasks". The file tasks is normalized, so it has one field "ID Task" and the other field is "Description". When i stay in a Layout from "People", i want to select a task for each one, so i have a Value list for tasks. "People" has a field that contain an ID field to insert the ID selection from the value list. To make that i put two fields overlap, the back is the real field to change, and the up is the related field that shows the description, but set behavior off. When i touch the field, FM shows the selection, but the field in the back seems selected and it brings up, show the number of ID. Why FM bring up, if i put it back? Thanks Jerry
QuinTech Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 OK, i think i see. As for your last question-- I think that maybe you are tabbing to the field in back. If you are able to select text, and then go to the ID field once you select something from the text field, then you can take the ID field out of the tab order. In fact, from what you've described, i can see no reason for this field to be visible at all, so i think you can remove this from your layout. Regarding the first question-- In your system, is it possible for one person to have more than one task? Also, is it possible for one task to be assigned to more than one person? And if so, how do you handle something like this? J
elflojo Posted September 9, 2004 Author Posted September 9, 2004 Thanks for all Jerry. I try to eliminate tab order but not works. FM brings to the front any field when you select it from a Popup men
QuinTech Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 If the ID field is in the background, and it is not in the tab order, and you do not have a Go To Field ( "ID Field" ) script step, there should be no way to get into the field. If you are selecting items from a popup menu tied to IDField, then i suspect that IDField is not actually in the background. Overlapping fields on layouts can get very confusing. I again recommend that, just for troubleshooting purposes, you position these fields so they are not overlapping. Then we can figure out what is going on. Regarding the first question-- In your system, is it possible for one person to have more than one task? Also, is it possible for one task to be assigned to more than one person? And if so, how do you handle something like this? Your answer to these questions may mean that you should try a different solution than the one you have now. So let's get these questions out of the way first, shall we? J
