Travis_Acrendo Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Hello Intro: I am trying to get some ideas to this preformance drawback. Background: I am using FMP Server 7 and FMP pro 7 clients. There are 38 Databases hosted on the Server. Pluggin: I am using the 24u SimpleHelp plugin - this generates Help Tags for a Layout. Problem: To implement the Help Tags, they have to be set on each layout of each database. Now we are trying to utilize FMP 7 advantage of not opening all databases on opening. However, the 24u Simple Help pluggin requires the file to be opened and run to attach the Help Tags. This is a huge preformance issue on start up. Right now each Database attaches the Help Tags on the opening script. Start up with only 8 Databases (15 plus layouts on each database) is about 90 secs. This horrible! Question: Is there anyway to have the FMP Server 7 attach the Help Tags, so when the clients log in the opening script will not have to run. Understanding: My understanding is that FMP Server 7 host the files closed, is this correct. Thanks for any help ! Travis Ferreira
Reed Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Is the delay only occurring when the plugin is enabled? Could you minimize the startup time by consolidating several tables into one DB file? Have you cleaned up all of the file references? (assuming these are upgraded files)
Travis_Acrendo Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 can you explain more in details the file references your talking about ? I don't think moving the tables into one DB will work. Thanks for responsing.
Reed Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 When you convert files from v6 to v7, all of the file references carry over. Many of them may be unnecesary. Go to the define->file references.... dialog, and remove all of the file references you don't need. Typically if all of your files are in one folder, you just need one file reference per file you want to relate to, and inside that file reference you should just have one line with the name of the related file. Many of the converted file references may search the entire computer (or network) for related files, which takes a long time.
FMDuck Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 BE CAREFUL - Be sure you don't just delete the file references without first identifying where they are used. If you have FM Dev 7 you can run a DDR to locate where the redundant references are used. You may also need to create new references all together and delete all the old ones. Although I don't use the 24U plug-in, I have solutions that use more than 10 plug-ins and don't expect that the plug-in is your issue. It's often file references. FM7 works much differently in how it looks for related files. Although it can be a good idea to consolidate your tables into less files, you should get increased performance in FM7 without any such changes.
