Multiple runtimes on Windows

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has come across this problem. I have a FM6 program running on both Windows and Mac computers. I can have multiple runtime versions (with different binding codes) open on the Mac - no problems. They are treated as different programs. However when I try to do the same thing on Windows (98 and XP) it sees all the runtimes as the same program and I can only have one open at a time. All the programming is the same - just different binding codes. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Ian

Multiple runtimes under windows requires a unique file extension for each file.

To further what Michael posted:

When a FileMaker Runtime EXEcutable is first run it checks the Windows Registry if the extension has been registered to the EXE file - if not, then it registers the extension to that EXE file in it's current folder address. If the extension is already associated, nothing is changed.

After that, any time a file with that extension is opened, Windows will call the associated EXE or DLL.

You can go to: http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileFormatA/0,289933,sid9,00.html

to find known file extensions currently in use. Just find an extension that is not in the list. I add a number to my runtime extensions that also allow me to track versions. You can even use a 4 character extension.
