I think this is an application for portals but I am still struggling through the basics of FM so here goes:

I have a photos table where I want to be able to assign one or several categories to each photo. The categories are in related table "categories". I am able to create a relationship that works fine for a single category, but everything I have tried for multiple categories has not worked. I tried to make 3 category fields in the photos table and relate them all to the categories table but FM won't let me do that (this is sloppy anyway). I know portals are supposed to allow this kind of flexibility but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Any suggestions you may have are appreciated!

Try this. Make the field in PHOTOS which relates to CATEGORIES into a checkbox field, defined as the list of categories in your related CATEGORIES table. Now you should see all available categories, and be able to select multiples. Conversely, a portal in CATEGORIES will show which photos are in that category.
