Custom Zooming?

Hi, As you may guess, I'm fairly new to Filemaker but I love it! Anyhow, I have a small company which currently uses 5.5 - I am (with a little help) rewriting our workflow system. I have some nice layouts but we have some PC's running different screen resolutions to others. Most run 1024 x 768 and the layouts have been designed to fit nicely. My laptop however runs 1400 x 1050 and the layout is too small. If I zoom to 150%, it's just a tad too big but acceptable. What I would like to do is perform a 'calculated zoom' if at all possible, where the layout will zoom dependant on screen resolution.

That way, the layout will appear the same on all PC's regardless of resolution.

Is this possible?

Many thanks in advance for help offered.

Try this instead: Edit | Preferences | General | Enlarge window contents to improve readability

Or, if you really must script this: Set Zoom Level

Hi Transpower,

Many thanks for your reply.

I did try setting the zoom level, but this had problems. On my laptop, a 150% zoom is about right. When you view a layout on a standard screen though, its zoomed in way too much. I have tried making the layout bigger on the higher resolution display but all that does is make the 1024 x 768 user have to scroll down to get to the header. I need to get some kind of dynamic zoom/resize but this seems hard to do.

I guess the best way is your way and set the layouts for 1024 x 768 and use the enlarge option on my higher resolution display.

Thank you for your suggestions.

With kind regards,

Andy

The layout zoom feature was IMHO never intended to be used this way. It's really pretty crude.

The best solution is to create separate layouts for each resolution. This way you can make the most of the available screen real estate, rather than just making everything bigger or smaller. Then script the layout changing process and select the correct layout using the Get(ScreenHeight) or Get(DesktopHeight) functions.

Multiple interfaces is a heck of a lot of work. I get the clients to specify *one* screen resolution to support. I then tell them support for extra screen resolutions will be extra charge, and it'll be a significant proportion of the total job quote. (Remember that the time needed to make any future interface changes will be multiplied by the number of supported resolutions.)

In other words, encourage them to support just one resolution.

It's a lot of wotk

I'm very surprised that FM Pro 7 doesn't seem able to adjust the rulers (and all the other graphics) to the right size at screen resolution 1024 x 768. If I hold a real ruler to the screen at 100% zoom I find that FMP7's inch is exactly 3/4 of a real inch. Adobe's products don't have this problem - they detect the resolution and make the adjustment. I wonder what gives? Gee, 768 x 1024 is a pretty common resolution. One "fix" would be a 133% zoom level.
