determine order calcs are performed

Featured Replies

If you change the position of fields in the Define Fields window, will it change the order in which calcs are processed?

I used to use Symantec's Q&A. In it you could decide the order.

I'm asking because I wonder, if the order were more logical relative to the algorithm, instead of being in a simple chronological order (when created), if the process might run faster.

Appreciate any help.

I don't think the order matters in how they are evaluated. Since calcs can't have circular definitions, those would not be affected. Perhaps Auto-Entered calcs might care.

I'm curious what your algorithm is that you are concerned about this.

It is just unnerving to a beginner like me to see a downstream result appear before an upstream result: sort of like seeing (2+(2*2)) show 6 and then show 4. But, if the order doesn't change anything, I'll just get used to the spooky action of FM.

In an audit solution, creation order does matter due to the setup of FM's dependencies. The same often goes for auto-enter calculations. With normal calculations, however, creation order should not matter. Changing the sorting order in Define Fields has no effect at all. Only the order in which fields are created has an impact.
