The need for FileMaker Developer 7

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, is it really worth it to purchase FileMaker Developer? I am not quite sure what the advantages are and I would like to get into some advanced development that Pro just does not seem to support...

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish but developer has some really good features.

Don't know what you mean by advanced development but you are surely better of with developer.

The script debugger is really nice to have and the new custom functions as well.

Yes. FMD has script debugger and enables the creation of runtimes. It also enables the creation of custom functions!

Also, if you want to extend the capabilities of FMP, and write your own plugins, you need a copy of FM Dev. to get the plugin API.

I would buy Developer JUST for the script debugger. This handy tool has helped me out several times over the extra cost.

The ability to create runtime/kiosk solutions is nice too, but only if you are planning to distribute your solution to others.

I haven't created too many custom functions yet, but I can see this will be a huge time saver for anyone that uses them. Most of the custom functions I've come across can be programmed other ways, but it's a big timesaver!
