FM Pro 6 Developer to Server oriented programs

Featured Replies

I am currently writing in FM Pro 6.0 Developer and need to advance to a multi-user environment.

What is the best route to take in either replacing FM 6 Dev or complimenting it with a network program developer?

Hi Dave,

Not sure I understand the question. Developing for a multi-user environment is done the same way as for a single-user. The main difference is that you need to make sure your solution is multi-user ready (proper understanding of how globals work in multi-user, how record-locking works, ...).

Hello Wim - I hadn't planned to get into multi-user for a while yet but the opportunity presents itself and "Ah cain't say no".

I have written a program that tracks automobiles on a large sales lot. I displays data on each vehicle as well as pictures. When there were only one or two sales people all was well - now there are 15 wanting to use the database.

This is my first excursion into multi-user and need all the help and information I can get. What is a good reference for the clues you've already provided me with (globals & record Locks etc.)?

Also - if multi-user can be accomplished without FM Server what is it's purpose?

Thank you for the consideration. It's appreciated.

Dave

Others here know way more than I do...

But PART of your question I can answer;

You can "Host" files with Filemaker Pro (non-server) to a limited number of simultaneos clients... 5 I beleive.

FM Server will serve up the files to more than 5 clients at a time.

You can "test out" your shared database by making them "Multi-User", and access the file by going "Open Remote" from another machine.

Hope this helps!

Thank you - unforseen circumstances intervened and I'm just now back in business.
