I noticed that when I open a remote file it only allows me to open a file thats on the local network. If I were to VPN into the network from my home computer, would I be able to open up the database in FMP through remote open? Thanks.

Yes. As soon as you authenticated on the VPN you are part of the local network (you get a local IP address) so you'll see the locally hosted files.
