can't do a find in a calculation field

I've got a first name, and last name field that get their information though a calculation. The calculation pulls the information from a related database. All IWP finds return no records found. Any ideas as to why?

Yes, it's set to IWP - all layouts are set to view only, not edit, which works fine via desktop.

So you are peforming a search in a related field... obvious question, do any *related* records exist that match the search criteria?

The related data shows up in the correct fields. I can flip through the records. When I try to isolate one record with a find, there's a no match response. Vaughn suggested I check versions. I am running 7.0.2. I'll upgrade to 3 and try again.
