How would I design a field that always numbered the record according to the sort order? Say in a bike race I show all the Women times from the shortest to the most. First being the least time and so on.

Calc field Place=Get(RecordNumber)

RecordNumber (as opposed to recordID) is dependent on the order of records in the found set, whatever that order is at the moment.

Make sure it's set to 'do not store calculation results' also.

I tried what your suggestion but end up with ? in the field. I made sure "Do not store calc" was checked. What am I doing Wrong?

If you're viewing these records in a portal, which you did not specify, that may be the problem.

If so, you can specify the portal row sort order and display the portal row number by placing a text element containing '@@' in the portal. Together, those should make it work also.
