FM 7: Can't specify report subtotal field?

Featured Replies

Hi. I'm new to FileMaker Pro so please bear with me. I have a Person table and a related Donations table. I am using the Layout Wizard to make a report with groups (based on the FullName calculated field in Person) that includes the donations from each person and subtotaled per person.

When I click the Specify button to choose the Amount field for subtotals, all the fields in the list are greyed out for all tables and I can't specify anything for subtotaling.

Am I going about this right way? Is it possible to get subtotals in a report containing related tables?

Thanks

David

I bet your problem is that the field you are trying to total is a text field, not a number field. Go back to Define Fields... and change to a number and it should work.

Thanks for your reply. No, the Amount field is a Number field. When I try to build a report on the Donations table itself, everything is still greyed out for choosing a subtotal field.

It's not because I'm using the trial version on XP, is it? I applied the v3 update but that didn't fix it.

Wait - do I need to create a actual summary field in the table itself so that I can use it in the report? Is that the only way to do it?

David:

Yes, you need to create a summary field; it will be selectable when choosing a subtotal field.
