Hi and thank you in advance for any help you can provide this humble newbie.

Short story: When hosting a file on FileMaker Server 7 Advanced, enabled for IWP, I can't log into any account except Guest using an Internet Explorer browser. The same file open on FileMaker Developer WILL allow login to other accounts.

Long Story:

I've been using FM Developer 7 for a few months and I have been doing well except for Instant Web Publishing. I will need to serve a database to 50 clients using Internet Explorer on an intranet, thus the need for IWP.

Here's what I'm using: FileMaker Server 7 Advanced on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, with IIS version 6. The Clients run Windows XP Pro and use Internet Explorer v6 with xpsp2.

I've read that if Guest is active and enabled for IWP using the fmiwp extended privilege, the file will open without a dialog and you get Guest access. Yes, this happens. I, however need users to log in with different privileges. I've also read that disabling Guest or removing fmiwp from Guest will cause a

dialog box to appear when trying to open the file from the Instant Web Publishing Database Homepage.

Yes again, but the server hosted file won't allow me to login to any account.

As a clue to the problem, I've noticed the dialog box is slightly different on the 2 platforms. I type the following on the IE address bar: http://ipaddress/fmi/iwp

I get to the Database Homepage, and click on mydb (the database file)

On the FM Developer 7 machine, the Dialog opens with the following title bar "Connect to Dev_IP_address" (that is the address of the Developer machine), the body of the dialog box says "Database mydb" above the UserId and Password lines. I CAN log in as Admin.

On the Server machine, the Dialog opens with the following title bar "Connect to Server_name" (that is the Machine NAME of the server), the body of the dialog box says "Connecting to Server_IP" above the UserId and Password lines (that is the Server's IP address).

If I enter a UserID of Admin the dialog box is re-displayed with the UserID changed to Server_nameAdmin. After 3 attempts I get an error screen.

I do not know Windows Server 2003 or IIS - they were both set up by a network administrator. But maybe that's where the problem lies. I would appreciate any ideas. Thank you.

I have the same problem when a guest access is enabled, even though there are other higher privledge accounts activated, trough IWP no password screen is displayed. However, if you go to the database directly with fmp 7 it operates correctly.

I have reported this bug to filemaker but do not know if they are working on it.

No for a solution (not great though)

1. turn off guest access the built in one for IWP privledges.

2. set up a real user call <guest> and a non changing password <guest>

3. set the privledges to be a view only person with out many or any other privledges

4. tell IWP that they are one of the users.

5. tell your lookie lu users to use username=guest pw=guest

It stinks, however now IWP will present the password login screen every time.

but the uninformed will still not be able to get in.

Hope they fix this in the next revision and the PC printing problems.

Sorry, I got excited on the first part of your msg:

Now to attempt to address the 2nd part.

<http://ipaddress/fmi/iwp> this is the essential and correct way to get to your list of databases.

If that list is being served out it seems likely that the IWP was set up correctly (perhaps) on the server.

From what you are saying past that part by clicking on the database from the web list served from IWP I would expect a simmilar password screen to the one you would see from fmp 7 client.

I would recommend you check the IWP access from other machines (there should be 50 of them) and see if they behave differently.

It sounds like to me that you have some settings problems with your own PC. Perhaps your IE 6 or > is protected to well (perhaps). Java settings to tight?? or ??

There are also many settings in the IWP setup both server side and database side to deal with.

The Server 7 Advanced Web Publishing Installation Guide and the Server 7 Administration Guide were critical for the sucessfull setup of all the necessary pieces for me.

Hope you find solution.

Larry, Thank you for your thoughts! My difficulties have been resolved!

Your key insights that helped were these:

There are also many settings in the IWP setup both server side and database side to deal with.

The Server 7 Advanced Web Publishing Installation Guide and the Server 7 Administration Guide were critical for the sucessfull setup of all the necessary pieces for me.

I went back through the Server 7 Advanced Installation guide, and there is a section on Setting up or Disabling Authentication for a Windows IIS Web Site. I found that by dis-abling all authentication methods for IIS, I CAN NOW enter USERID and PASSWORD as defined in the FileMaker file and the database opens with the correct access privileges.

As in my previous post I don't know IIS or Windows Server 2003 and ASSUMED the administrators settings were OK.

MORAL: READ the DOCS !! laugh.gif

Thanks again, Larry!
