Hi all,

I recently, saved and emailed a copy of a database in FM 5.5 om my mac x panther system and after

opening my email and downloading my database, my new FM 7 tells me that I must first convert my 5.5 file before I can import it. Can someone explain how this process works, I can't seem to find it in the help files.

thanks in advance,

Rick

Hello freegold,

Converting from v5/6 to v7 can be easy or difficult depending on the complexity of your DB. If your DB is made from multiple related files, many scripts, complex calculations etc., I recommend that you read about migrating your solution before attempting anything. There are lengthy documents on FileMaker's website and I think there may also be a document or two on the CD.

If you have a real simple DB you could just try converting it. If it is a single file you simply drag (a copy) of the old version and drop it on top of the V7 icon. This works in Windows. Macs, I don't know but probably the same. If it is a multi-file solution then drag the folder of files onto the icon.

However, I really can't emphasize enough how important it is that you understand some of the gotchas that happen with the upgrade.

Good luck.

To convert the file, just open the file from FM7. It will then convert the file to version 7 automatically. Then you can either use the file as-is, or close it and import records from it into another FM7 file.

Hi again,

I have tried both dragging and dropping my simple db fp5.5 file on fp7 and using the open command once fp7 is running and neither has worked. When I use the open command, I get an error message that says first I must convert my db

to an fp7 db. Any other suggestions?

thanks again,

Rick
