OpenLink ODBC vs MyODBC on Mac OS X with FMP6?

We are beginning to migrate away from Windows 2000/FMP6 to Mac OS X/FMP6 [FMP7 will be migrated to at some point, but not for a while]. Under Windows, we've got FMP able to update our MySQL db via ODBC and the MySQL AB. free driver, MyODBC.

I downloaded MyODBC for OS X on Friday, yet FMP6 would not see the MyODBC datasource [eg: when using the File->Open->ODBC Source]. I tried this with FMP7 as well, and came up with the same results.

After doing some research, it appears that the reason for this is because FMP6 [and 7?] is a CFM application, and the MyODBC driver is a Mach O application, as is the OS X ODBC administrator application. I had to download iODBC [a free ODBC administrator program for creating DSNs], and also download a 30-day evaluation of a CFM-based MySQL driver from a company called OpenLink <http://www.openlinksw.com/>.

OpenLink charges $99 per seat for their MySQL driver, but it actually does work with FMP6.

My question to y'all here is - has anyone successfully used the free MyODBC MySQL ODBC driver with FMP6 running OS X [10.3.8 in this case]? Spending $99 for something that has been free in the Windows world just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I am very much interested in learning if there is a way to use the MyODBC driver with FMP6.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

You should try the ODBC Driver for Open Source Databases from Actual Technologies. We give you everything you need to connect to MySQL from FileMaker 6 or 7 on OS X for $29.95, including the iODBC framework.

You can download the driver and verify that you can connect from FMP before spending any money - the driver by default is in a non-expiring demo mode. Our website FAQ includes useful informating for both FMP and MySQL. You should also feel free to contact us if you have any questions - we will do everything we can to get you up and running with our driver.

FileMaker OS X (6and 7) use either interface. If any CFM driver Managers are installed (Using the supllied FileMaker OSX driver installer or from Microsoft Office) , it uses CFM, otherwise mach 0 drivers.

Just read the MacOS X part at the openlink support site, then follow instruktions on how to disable/delete the CFM driver manager.

I have so far been able running MyODBC on FileMaker 7, but not 6 (Query error). It might be a problem with the version of the ODBC SDK used by Filemaker 6 's ODBC plugin.
